San Juan de Gaztelugatxe Tour and Basque Coast Walk
Eight people, a hidden viewpoint above the headland, then ninety minutes on the coast path and the staircase with a guide whose parents were married in the chapel at the top.
- Group of eight
- Entrance included
- Five languages
- Three and a half hours
Every other trip on this coast treats the islet as one stop among several. This one treats it as the whole point, and the difference shows in what you get told on the way up: why the place matters locally, what grows on the headland, and which seabirds are working the water below.
Three and a half hours from Bilbao and back. No fishing port, no Assembly House, no wine — just the coast, the steps and the bell.
The hidden viewpoint
Weather permitting, a stop above the headland that the coach tours drive straight past.
Ninety minutes on foot
The coast path and the 241 steps, at a pace eight people can agree on.
Five languages
Guided in English, Spanish, Basque, German or Italian.
The ecology of the headland
What lives on the rock and in the water, which almost no other trip covers.
The walk, from the van to the bell
The van leaves central Bilbao and takes about forty minutes to reach the coast. Before the descent there is a stop at a viewpoint tucked into the vegetation above the headland, where the whole shape of the climb becomes clear and the photograph is better than the one everybody takes from the roadside.
Then the walk itself: down the path, across the bridge, and up the staircase, roughly ninety minutes with the stops built in. The guiding on the way up is about the place rather than the television series — the ecology of the headland, the plants that survive the salt, and what the chapel has meant here for centuries.
Why eight people changes the day
On a coach you hear the guide at the meeting point and then again at the top. In a group of eight the commentary carries the whole way, questions get answered as they occur, and nobody is waiting on forty other people to reassemble. It is the reason this trip carries the highest rating on the coast.

Who this suits, and who should book something gentler
Book this if
- The islet is what you came for and the towns can wait.
- You enjoy an active half day and a real walk.
- A group of eight sounds better than a coach.
- You want the natural history as well as the view.
Choose another trip instead if
- You are travelling with under-12s — the six-hour trip with private transport is the family-friendly way to reach the same steps.
- You want the whole coast in one day — the ten-hour trip with the fishing port, Mundaka, Gernika and a tasting is built for that.
Know before you go
Fitness: a real walk with a real climb. Built for over-12s who are
comfortable on stairs and steady on their feet.
Weight limit: the operator sets one at 140 kg, for safety on the exposed
sections.
Shoes: comfortable walking shoes, not sandals.
The viewpoint: weather-dependent, so treat it as a bonus rather than a
guarantee.
Language: pick yours at booking, so the right guide is assigned.

Questions about this walk
How big is the group?
Eight people at most, and often fewer. That is small enough to hear the guide on a windy staircase and to set the pace between you.
Which languages is it guided in?
English, Spanish, Basque, German and Italian. Confirm your language when you book so the right guide is assigned.
Is the entrance to the islet included?
Yes. Entrance to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is written into the inclusions, along with the guide and transport from Bilbao.
Is it suitable for children?
This one is built for over-12s with a reasonable level of fitness. Families with younger children usually do better on the six-hour trip with private transport and hotel pick-up, which allows a slower pace.
What if I do not want to climb the whole staircase?
The secret viewpoint and the coast path come before the steps, and both are worth the trip on their own. Stopping at the bridge is a normal choice on this walk, not a failed attempt.
Not sure this is the one? Gaztelugatxe Tours lists every option with what it includes, and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe tour alternatives are set out the same way. The climb itself is described on the access and climb page.
Eight people, one headland, three and a half hours
The highest-rated way to reach the hermitage, with entrance included and the coast path before the steps.
